How To Choose Between A Burial And Cremation

Although you may not want to think about the intricate details of your death, funeral and what you would eventually like done with your body, there comes a time when it needs to be thought about. One of the most important choices to make is whether you want to be buried or cremated, and this is something which you should consider for a long while.

There are positive and negative points to both sides and it all comes down to personal preference. It is important to choose between them though, and to inform your family so they are aware of your wishes after you are gone.

Although cremation is growing in popularity, burials are the common choice for many, usually because they want to be in a place where family members can come and visit their grave, pay their respects and contemplate over memories they will have of you.

Cremations are often said to be more environmentally friendly, as it isn't taking up space in the ground and leaving all the substances left after the burial in the earth. However, opposing this idea are people who say that the large amount of fuel it takes to cremate the body is also bad for the environment.

Family traditions and values also play a big part in the choice. If the rest of the family have been buried, it is likely you will want a burial too, often near the place of lost relatives. Those with religious beliefs are especially keen on burial as they say it is more respectful to the body and soul of the person.

You can still have somewhere where people can visit you if you choose a cremation, such as a memorial in a special location. You may want your ashes scattered somewhere, or to be turned into a piece of jewellery, which is also increasingly common. These can be carried around by a member of the family, such as a left-behind wife or husband as a way of keeping you with them even when you are gone.
