Reasons to Build a Small Boat

Having a boat to enjoy truly is one of life's luxuries. There is the pleasure of just getting out in the boat itself, along with many other associated past times such as fishing, diving and water skiing. The pleasure of boats is not confined to the finished product and in this article we can look at 5 reasons to build your own small boat.
Firstly there is a great amount of enjoyment and satisfaction in building your own small boat. The materials used can vary though would usually be limited to aluminium or timber. I had a friend who over a number of months built an aluminium boat in his back shed with no previous experience, and it was seaworthy. Timber would more than likely be the beginners choice with materials easily available and a limited number of tools required. A selection of cutters, sanders, files, hammers and measuring tools would just about cover it. It would be recommended to source some plans for small boat building as a guide to begin with. These can be easily found on the internet or a local source like the library.
The building of a small boat could be done as an individual or as a team effort. Imagine the multiplication of enjoyment and satisfaction, if you built your small boat either in conjunction with your best mates or as a way of passing on knowledge to someone else. What a great way to spend time with your children by building a small boat that you could both use. You could have an ongoing project to be worked on each weekend and a family outing on completion when it is ready to launch.
Once the boat has been built there are many different ways to enjoy it. Simply packing a lunch and cruising up the river for a day is always a favourite. You could take friends or family on a fishing trip in the river or on the ocean. Scuba Diving is another popular past time enjoyed regularly by people on boats. Depending on what type of boat you build, you may even have a big enough motor to enjoy a bit of water skiing.
Alternatively there is the option, should you become fairly proficient at small boat building, to turn your talents into a business. You could sell the finished product for others to enjoy or you could use your skills to train others by running classes or seminars on how to build small boats. There is also the opportunity to do some volunteer work with sea scouts or other organisations where your skills would be highly valued. Think about how rewarding that would be.
It may all seem like a hard task at first, but with the right attitude and a suitable set of plans, you really could be building your own small boat. Why not when there are so many good reasons to do so.
