Choosing Food That Lower Cholesterol For A Healthy Heart



High cholesterol or LDL is something no one wants to hear from the doctor. When they do, they start to think about everything that they are not allowed to eat anymore. Then they start to think about all the boring food that they will have to eat. Fortunately, there is a lot of good food that lower cholesterol that you already enjoy.

Number one on the list has to be whole grains, oats, and other high fiber foods. Oatmeal can lower the bad cholesterol because of its soluble fiber, which is also found in barley, prunes, and apples. It has been reported that those who ate mainly whole grains had the slowest progression in artery wall thickness, meaning low LDL numbers.

Many people love blueberry muffins without realizing the health benefits behind that little berry. The antioxidants in blueberries make them a perfect sweet treat in lower LDL levels. Many experts believe that blueberries work just as well as some of the commercial drugs on the market, but with fewer side effects.

Omega 3 is incorporated in many things today because of the health benefits associated with it. However, you can get this naturally when you eat fatty fish or use fish oils in your diet. Two serving a week will help keep your numbers down, just make sure you bake or grill it to avoid adding bad fats to your diet. If eating fatty fish isn't possible or desired, fish oil supplements can give you some similar benefits.

A handful of nuts in your salad will replace the high fat cheese or croutons, and can significantly help reduce your levels. Most kinds of nuts such as walnuts, almonds, pistachios, and pecans may help reduce the risk of heart disease by keeping the LDL low. Since they are already high in calories, skip the sugar and salted ones.

Olives and Olive Oil - Olives are an excellent source of good fat. That good fat helps to protect against heart disease because of a potent mix of antioxidants. That mix of antioxidants fights and lowers the bad, while leaving the good cholesterol alone. You can easily use more of this in your diet when you cook or in salads. It is very good for the heart, but there are calories in it so don't overdo it.

If your doctor tells you that you have high LDL levels, you'll need to start eating food that lower cholesterol right away. Good for you foods does not mean no flavor foods, it just means making different choices. While the foods keep your LDL levels low, they will also help you live longer, reducing your risk of heart diseases.
