New storage racks for University garage

New racking is to be installed in the bike garage at Portland State University.

As around three thirds of the University’s staff and students now use bikes, the garage at Montgomery Street will now have more storage for the increased number of cycles.

In fact the garage will now have the city’s first ever double decker style storage racks to meet the requirements from staff and students as there is a great shortage for parking bikes on the campus. These double sized racks will provide twice the amount of storage provided by other garages.

The garage will also have an eco-roof with space for vegetation planting which will help reflect the heat of the sun and keep the building cool inside.

This new garage comes after another similar design was installed at Harrison Street and it now brings the total number of spaces available for bikes in and around the campus to 2,000. In addition, the University also plans to add bike garages of this kind to the rest of its buildings. It is hoping that over the next few years, it will be able to add one new garage every year.

With security cameras and an alarm system in place, the new facility will be able to store bikes securely meaning that staff and students can be sure their property is being well looked after while they are attending classes or teaching.

Portland State University was set up in 1946 after the Second World War when a large number of veterans were returning to the Portland area looking for higher education.

Set up by Stephen Epler, who was also founder of the state of Portland, the University was also able to grow due to a World War II GI Bill that gave returning soldiers money in order to help them pay for higher education.
