The 2012 Mayan Calendar Controversy

The Mayan Civilization had prospered in Mesoamerica for 3000 years and their contribution to the development of the modern society is still noted today. The Mayans had created a complex system of mathematics enabling them to use a system of calendar written with the base 20. The Mayan Calendar today is subject to various interpretations by scholars and non scholars as to what it really means. Let us take a deeper understanding of the so called 2012 Mayan calendar system.
There are basically three kinds of Mayan calendar: the Haab, Tzolkin date and the most controversial Long Count. The Haab Calendar is also called the civil calendar. It has 18 months with 20 days each, and a last month having 5 days, called the Uayeb month. Secondly, the Tzolkin date, like the Haab, Tzolkin has no year component. Its cycle is composed of 260 days, each name of the day ahs two components: a number that ranges from 1 to 13 and the 20 day signs. The combination of the two components creates the whole cycle of 260 days. The main difference between the Haab and Tzolkin is that the Haab is patterned after the cycle of the sun and the latter is patterned after the cycle of the moon. The Tzolkin is used for agriculture and sacred divination.
Lastly, the Long Count which is more popularly known to many as the 2012 Mayan Calendar. Unlike the first two types of calendar, the long count has a year component. It has 13 cycles each cycle is composed of 394 years or 144,000 days. It is said that the start of the Long Count date is estimated to August 11, 3114 B.C and its end will come in December 21, 2012, thus some popularly call it the 2012 Mayan Calendar. Mayan Calendar are largely based on the cycles of the heavenly bodies, the Mayan believes that an end of the cycle, the sun will be at the center of the galaxy.
Like what was said before the end of the Long count date has been subjected to various interpretations, most are apocalyptic in nature. The scientific community claims that every year, during December, the sun approximately does align at the center of the galaxy but has no detrimental effect on earth. Others believed that the change that will happen will not be apocalyptic in nature but rather a change of people's system of beliefs, a change in ideologies, and the likes.
The end of the 2012 Mayan Calendar is a reminder of a milestone of humanity. Maybe it is also a reminder to those people who live their lives one day at a time without worrying about the future, to worry about it. It already depends on a person on how will be these information be interpreted, but be reminded that in every action, decision and thought that we commit is interconnected with the vast universe we live in.
