ADD/ADHD As A Neurological Problem: An Introduction

ADD is known as a disorder of the neurological sort caused in the brain by malfunction within the dopamine neurotransmitter systems. Genetics plays a massive part in numerous cases, as there's a probability of about 30% that a child to a parent who suffers from ADD, will also suffer from ADD. In cases of twin children, if one of the two suffers from ADD, the other’s chances of having the disorder is higher by 50%. In the past people used to assume that the cause of ADD is malnutrition. Nevertheless, this assumption was found to be incorrect. Bad parenting, allergic reactions and drugs, don't account for ADD either. Deep head trauma, fetal alcohol syndrome, intoxication by lead, and thyroid irregularities, are some of the other medical conditions that are not ADD but are showing symptoms similar to ADD. Thus, before one is able to know that a patient suffers from ADD rather than from another health condition, it is important to rule out all of the above alternatives.

The factor that is missing for individuals who suffer from ADD is sufficient stimulation of the brain. Their brain, therefore, searches for methods that will help it to release more neuro-chemicals. Movements and physical activity, are means for individuals with ADD ot try to stimulate their brains. This is not a conscious decision on the parts of the people with ADD. They really cannot help it and it becomes a reflex, which implies that they usually act in a hyperactive manner. People with ADD try to stimulate their brains with things like physical activities, movements, and always doing things that are stimulating. This is not a conscious decision on the parts of the people with ADD. They really cannot help themselves and it turns into a reflex, which means that they usually act in a hyperactive manner. Having ADD implies that a person having it, is not getting enough neuro-chemicals. Phrased in simpler words it means that proper stimulation of the brain is missing. As a result of that the brain attempts to find strategies by which the release of the chemicals may be increased.

The issue attributable to that is that people who are suffering from ADD, when face a circumstance that don't stimulate them, like school work, try to put their consideration on something that is stimulating to them. In fact the school work is completely hampered by this, and the child cannot perform well in his or her studies. %%% I can narrate a story here told to me by a friend. This incident occurred when information about ADD was poor. There was a child who would all of a sudden stand up on his desk when the class is still commencing, and would start to tell jokes. At the beginning people thought that he was attempting to be funny and consciously disturb the others. In fact, his actions were past his control, however this was clear to everyone only after it became apparent that the kid has ADD.

People with ADD tend to face employment issues, and they are prone to experience problems with their interpersonal relations. In some cases they behave irresponsibly when in search of stimulation, and sometimes they can be dangerous to themselves and to others. In some cases they even end up in jail.
