Uses for grp mouldings

Glass reinforced plastic, commonly known as grp or fibreglass, has a multitude of different functions, being used for everything from boat building to architectural designs.

Fibreglass consists of a reinforcing fibre (typically glass, although other fibres can be used) embedded in a resin matrix. The fibres are commonly held on a mat which dissolves in the resin. The resin, which is normally epoxy or polyester based, hardens in a catalysed reaction within a mould designed to the exact specifications of the intended finished product – hence, grp mouldings.

There are numerous benefits to using fibreglass over other materials. It is light, flexible, easily tooled into elaborate shapes, weather resistant and incredibly strong. There is virtually no limit to the size grp mouldings can be made, or the uses to which they can be put. They have been used for everything from sailing the Atlantic, to building architectural facades, to replacing broken ornaments.

Fibreglass is widely used in the TV and movie industries, and is a common advertising tool. Mr Whippy ice cream cones, the “M” in McDonalds and the incredibly scary clown heads at Butlins have all been created from grp mouldings.

Fibreglass is a popular tool for artists, sculptors and interior/exterior designers, who can create almost any idea. If you’ve dreamed of having your own castle with a drawbridge in your garden – well, now you can! On a less extravagant level, you can create your own garden ponds, play equipment and garden furniture.

Versatile and affordable, grp mouldings are equally at home in both an industrial and a household landscape. We at Fibreglass UK design and manufacture grp mouldings to our clients’ exact specifications.
