Aluminum Anodes as Sacrificial Anodes for Brackish Water


Aluminum anodes go a long way in fighting corrosion. For this property it is used as sacrificial anode in the marine industry. A sacrificial anode as the name suggests gets depleted in the process of protecting a more valuable metal on any submerged vessel in a marine environment.

Aluminum anodes in marine industry:
Aluminum anodes are today widely used in the marine industry for its capacity to fight corrosion in an aquatic environment. And they work best in brackish water. Applications for these anodes include ship hulls, tank interiors, offshore structures, submerged pipelines, piers, pilings, etc. They are usually cast in different sizes and weights to provide maximum performance in seawater and brackish environments. It is to be noted here that fresher the water the less electrical current is transferred, requiring the more active aluminum anode.

Aluminum anodes Vs. Zinc anodes:
Many people feel that zinc anodes are better than aluminum anodes as sacrificial anodes in any marine environment. This is because till recently zinc anodes were cheaper than aluminum anodes. But this is no longer the case. Today, aluminum anodes are available at a cheaper rate than their zinc counterparts. And thus, they are a preferred today in most commercial applications. Indeed, aluminum anodes provide excellent corrosion protection for steel and aluminum hull vessels that operate in salt or brackish water. And indeed, they work far more effectively than zinc anodes also known as boat zincs.
