The Many Faces of War Strategy Games

Since wars have various military patterns, most war strategy games also applied such a factor. In strategic warfare, players would need to choose the type of army that he would command. The army that would be commanded would be according to the theme or style of the virtual application. If the game is set in the First or Second World War the army as well as the weapons , would focus on that time period. If the application, however, were on a different setting, such as the time of Greeks and Romans, then weapons and infrastructures would also be on that same period. Not all strategy games are played on land. Some of them are on sea or naval warfare while others are on the air. Again, the terrain of the map would be centered on the type of theme that the game has. It all depends on the gamer if he would enjoy strategic warfare, which is focused on modern weapons or an application, which is based on another time period. Another feature of most online war strategy worlds is on the interface.

There are certain war strategy games which rely on turn tables. Players would have a specific schedule for each attack and after moving an army, the other player would have the chance to move his army . The turn table feature is much like in chess wherein players would need to complete a set of moves before another player would have a chance. The timer setting would again focus on the type of warfare. Since most strategy games have a specific time frame , there are some strategy application designers which designed their games to look like a chess piece. The most famous design in strategic gaming is the hexagonal table wherein players would need to move in a hexagon divided map. In a hexagon type of strategy game, a regular terrain is divided into a couple of hexagons. Players would then move into the hexagon in order to meet with the enemy and engage attack. The ability to move would depend on the type of army a player is controlling much like in Chinese checkers. The hexagonal type of gaming is quite different from another design used in some war strategy games.

In some applications, players do not need to wait turns in order to maneuver in the battlefield. There are some applications which are designed in a continuous motion wherein both players would have unlimited gaming. This type of game has no time schedules of turn tables meaning players would be able to move whenever or wherever they want. Such types of warfare do not rely on hexagonal mapping and directional controls. Armies would be able to move in multiple directions. There are also some war strategy games that still respect the concept of a terrain. This means that ships can only be deployed in water while armies are on land. Players would be able to manipulate their army to move in various directions and they would be able to choose if they want to attack by sea, by air or by land.
