The Hills Season 6 Review - Part 2
|
Okay. After the furore of the first half, The Hills finally calmed down during the second half of season 6, much to my dismay. Despite the fact that it was somewhat sadist to get excited over a couple going insane together on television, there was something absolutely enthralling about it, and millions of viewers would probably agree with me. It is really hard to have any sympathy for Spencer, even though he really appears to be suffering. Where all this hatred and anger came from, I do not know. His sister had clearly been suffering from problems herself, yet he, like many others with mental illness, simply made it worse by adding to her pain. Can his illness be held as an excuse for that? Well, that's a debate that is more philosophical than californian, so perhaps we will leave that for another time. Let's just agree for now, that Spencer's yelling at his sister and cutting her out of his life is just plain nasty.
As a result of Spencer and Heidi's increasingly insane behavior, the girls decide to cut the couple out of their lives for good. Holly, Heidi's loyal sister (reminiscent of her mother), is extremely upset at this and greets the decision with floods of tears. Unfortunately, with the omission of Speidi, the second half of the final season is considerably less engaging than the first. True, it is more sane and stable, but who wants that, right? It's TV!
The group go to Costa Rica after Audrina's breakup with Ryan, and good ol' Justin Bobby even comes along, but he gets shut down when he makes an advance at Ms Patridge. Kristin goes off with the barman to make Brody jealous, like we haven't seen that before. Stephanie finally finds a nice boyfriend with an edge, a motorcross racer, and Lo moves in with boyfriend Scott. I know I shouldn't say this, because I can't control their lives, but in terms of TV, it's all kind of, well, lame... Nothing special is happening, and MTV try to make it more eventful by having Kristin 'leave' for Europe, at which news Brody sheds a tear and Kristin wipes it away. The ending, however, shows that it is all a fabricated twist in the plot as the HOLLYWOOD board is taken away and the TV set is revealed. So is The Hills fact or fiction? Maybe a bit of both. All I know is, it was very much an anticlimax, if there even was a climax to begin with. Now that it's over, what next?
