Gmail Safety - Always Use HTTPS

Those of you who at the moment use Gmail may have observed a brand new notice in pink on the top of your e mail display Extra Google Mail Security.

This message tells us that Google Mail, or Gmail, is now offering HTTPS by default. HTTPS stands for Hypertext Switch Protocol Secure. It supplies authenticated and encrypted communication. HTTPS is identical protocol used by banks to maintain your on-line accounts safe. In easy phrases this means your knowledge is coded at your net browser end and uncoded at Google's mail servers. Your knowledge is subsequently safe because it travels between your web browser and the Google Mail servers.

(For an extra technical rationalization see Wikipedia.org)

Basically, on-line information is susceptible to hacking. HTTPS encrypts your data so in case you are using public Wi-Fi or any non-encrypted network, your privacy and security are nonetheless safeguarded.

Non-secure networks make it easier for somebody to entry your bank statements or log-in details. This will result in identification theft and somebody gaining access to your Gmail account can access much more than you want to share!

Google has been forward of the other mainstream webmail suppliers in that it allowed encrypted access to Gmail. A configuration change was required but it was available. Hotmail and Yahoo! wouldn't have this option, nor does Facebook. And now Gmail presents it as a default. Great information for our e-mail security.

The default choice Gmail has introduced is "always use HTTPS". This extra of safety can decelerate your Gmail so if you are utilizing a safe network you can select to disable this option. In case you disable HTTPS, Gmail will still robotically encrypt the login page to protect your password.

Unless your Gmail actually slows down it's probably a good idea to leave the new default in place. Otherwise make a note to turn it on once more if you work from a Wi-Fi cafe or public space.

It is vitally easy to activate and off this function. Just go to Settings > Basic >Browser connection and choose At all times use https or Do not at all times use https.

Click on on Save Changes.

You will have to manually change the browser from "https://mail.google.com" to "http://mail.google.com" once you disable https.
