The historic area of New England is famous all around the world for its autumn colour and its importance in American History. It is an area famous for its culture and its old families and its unofficial capital is the town of Boston in Massachusetts. One of the oldest cities in the USA, Boston reflects this in its theatres and well known performing arts tradition, its colleges and universities with its Ivy League traditions and its museums. If you stay in Boston hotels you will be surrounded by history and the opportunity for unique sightseeing.
Because of its role in the American Revolution, Boston has a number of museums and places to visit which have associations with this famous event in American history. You can leave one of your Boston hotels and follow the Freedom Trail, a red brick path which will take you on a walk to the historical sites finishing at the famous Bunker Hill monument; with museums and graves to visit on the way. You could also visit one of the many museums, such as the Museum of Fine Art which is free to visit on a Wednesday night, or the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum, which is housed in a stunning building designed like a Venetian palace and influenced by the founder’s love of all things Italian. Incidentally, if your name is Isabella, you can get in free.
Sport is also very popular in Boston. When staying at Boston hotels you can choose from a variety of popular sports. The Boston Red Sox, one of the USA’s most famous baseball teams, play at Fenway Park and just outside of the city you can watch American football at the Gillette Stadium where the New England Patriots play. Boston is also home to the Boston Celtics, winners of seventeen world championships in basketball. On a less traditional note, you could also support the world class women’s soccer team, the Boston Breakers, whose home ground is at Harvard University. Not to forget the world famous Boston marathon, held every April and attracting world class athletes as well as enthusiastic amateurs.
If shopping is one of your pleasures, you need look no further than Boston. It has a wide variation of shops from the Open Market where as well as fresh produce you can pick up antiques to Newbury Street where you will find designer stores with up to date chic fashions. There are of course also the usual department outlets available; meaning that there is shopping for everyone to take back to their Boston hotels whatever their budget. |
