Hair loss treatments - the alternatives to surgery

Propecia, otherwise known as Finasteride, is a licensed drug in the form of a tablet that has been developed to male pattern baldness and other types of hair loss in men. It works by inhibiting the enzyme that converts testosterone to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which helps hair return to a normal growth cycle, and it has been shown to increase hair growth in 66% of men. Propecia should be taken once a day, and any side effects including headaches impotency and loss of libido are minimal.
Dutasteride, or Avodart is a capsule that was developed for use in benign prostate hyperplasia, but has been found to indirectly help with male pattern baldness. This hair loss treatment is only suitable for men and works in a similar way to Propecia. Capsules are taken once a day, and side effects are minimal.
Minoxidil is available in two types for men and women, and is a liquid based treatment which is massaged into the scalp. It is now know exactly how Minoxidil works, but the accepted theory is that it dilates the blood vessels around the hair follicles to increase the nutrient supply and encourage hair growth. About 1ml is applied in the morning and again in the evening directly to the scalp and then gently massaged in until the entire affected area has been treated. Again, this hair loss treatment has very few side effects, although headaches, rashes and mild facial hair growth can be common.
