What are PLC systems?

Supervisory control and data acquisition systems (known as scada) are computer systems that monitor and control industrial or commercial processes in real-time situations. The 3 most common types are:

• HMI (human-machine interface) systems, which collect data that is then processed by a human operator

• Scada single supervisory stations - single servers or PCs that communicate between field equipment (such as plc systems) and HMI workstations

• Plc systems (short for programmable logic controller systems), which are field devices used to gather data and send commands to the process in operation

The devices used in plc systems are sophisticated computers, utilising software which is used to automate electromechanical processes such as assembly lines, and chemical plant and refinery operations. On a lighter note, they are also an important feature of theme park rides.

Plc systems, unlike PC’s, have multiple inputs and outputs and advanced environmental hardware such as enhanced temperature control, screening from electrical interference, and vibration resistant cabinets. The programs that control operation of the machinery are normally stored in a non-volatile memory with battery back-up to ensure it doesn’t fail.

Plc systems obey the scada requirement of operating in real-time, as the output data results must be generated in response to input commands within a set time frame. If not, there will be unintentional machinery operation, which could be disastrous.

Plc systems can be single or modular. Modular systems are housed in a chassis, or rack, with each customised module having a different function.

At Iconsys we provide fully integrated scada and plc systems for a wide range of industries.
