There’s more to the Algarve than just beaches.
|
Algarve, in Portugal is one of the most gorgeous places on the planet – you can’t deny that it’s lush green areas, it’s coves and bays secreted around it’s coast and it’s building style are some of the prettiest on the continent. But there’s more to the Algarve than what you see at first glance. Here we’ve outlined some of the prettiest tourist areas and what you can do in them.
Visit Loulé
In February, Loulé comes alive, with a huge festival – but all year round this fast paced metropolitan area is a city filled with things to do – with five gorgeous, recommended beaches, ranging from Vilamoura to Garrão each backed by amazing ochre sandstone cliffs, it’s not hard to see why the beaches are popular here. Gorgeous sands stretch from the cliffs to the sea, all soft and clean, and the see is an enchanting and beguiling blue.
If you’re not interested in sunbathing, or you want a bit of a change, there are dozens of golf courses, as Loulé is a centre of Portuguese excellence for golf. And if golf isn’t your thing, you can tour the architecture – Loulé has some of the most breathtaking places to explore, including art galleries and chapels.
There are several hotels and self catering places to stay, depending on your taste, so there really is something for everyone in Loulé.
Or Castro Marim
In the latter summer months of at the end of August and September, there’s an event called ‘Medieval Days’ held in Castro Marim. The city becomes a backdrop where a series of medieval events are played out, each a breathtaking sight. Other times of the year Castro Marim still has lots on, including events centred on lace making, handicrafts and even the Festival of the Snail. Each has its own charm and caters to a specific type of interest, but the city and surrounding area is still interesting without interest in these festivals.
Again, there’s a wide choice of places to stay, depending on what you’re interested in doing and experiencing, but no matter what you do, you should immerse yourself in the ambiance and architecture at least once during your stay – Castro Marim was once one of the most important towns in Portugal, on the border of it and Spain and has a vast array of castles, fortified positions, and places to explore, from churches to chapels and art galleries and tourist spots.
And other places
Wherever you visit in the Algarve for sun worshipping, or for more energetic pursuits such as enjoying the architecture or even golfing you can find something for everyone in one of the most beautiful places in Portugal. |
