Three important things to consider when scrapping your car

Scrapping a car is an important step when considering to get rid of your car. You may have no choice in the matter, or it may simply just be uneconomical to repair the car – it may have been in an accident, and can’t be repaired or is simply at the point where you don’t want it any more. No matter what the reason, the five most common questions and answers when people ask ‘how do I scrap my car’ are contained below.

Can I scrap my car for money? There are lots of scaremongering articles online that suggest that you sell your car for scrap, you may find that you’re confused as to whether you can even sell your car for scrap. The straight answer is if you use a reputable dealer and ensure that all of the paperwork required is completed and returned, to ensure that your car is listed as scrapped (so that if the worst does happen you have a paper trail, and are indemnified from any legal action that may arise from the car being sold on in a dangerous state) then there’s no problem with you scrapping cars for money.

Do I take scrap my car with a local or specialist yard? One of the first questions many people ask is whether to use a local junk yard or a specialist one. In many cases it depends on two things – the condition of your car, and the type of scrap car it is. It’s much easier to sell, say, a BMW for scrap to a specialist, than a Ford, but there is always a case to look into whether there are any places locally, or nationally, that will take your scrap car.

Do I scrap my car or sell it? Many people then wonder whether they should sell or scrap their car. Scrap cars are generally only in that position where all that’s left to do is strip them for parts and then recycle the rest.

It all depends on the car itself – if the car is dangerous or too severely damaged to repair, if it would cost more to repair than it will when you sell it on after, the option to scrap may be the best one.

These three key points, before scrapping your car, will give you the best idea whether you can scrap your car, or whether there’s another solution or path you can take – and will allow you to research where to sell your car to, and whether you want to scrap or repair your car. With this information in hand your choices will be easier, and you can work out where best to take your car.
