Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County - Season 1 Review
|
First aired by MTV in September 2004, Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County was a reality television series documenting the lives of a group of privileged teenagers living in Laguna Beach, Orange County. The first episode is nothing special, with the love triangle between Stephen Colletti, Kristin Cavallari and Lauren Conrad (the narrator and main character), becoming slowly obvious. And while the premiere is indeed rather bland, there is something about the episode that makes you think, "what the hey, I'll just keep on watching."
Perhaps it is the beautiful, uplifting series of Laguna beach, a small town of cascading green hills and an immaculate beach, leading to the ocean and the bright golden sun on the horizon. It could be that. OR it could be the easy accessibility of the show, and by that I mean, it's very relaxing to watch, because you really don't have to think much. More so than sleeping, it puts your brain on standby, quite a useful trait for any type of entertainment, and you can see why the series became so popular. Even if you can't relate to what is going on in the series, because it has never happened to you, it is still entertaining. I mean, who doesn't want to watch people get jealous, have bitter fights and rivalries, all in the most beautiful town you could ever hope to grow up in? I know I do.
The second episode continues the Stephen-Kristin-L.C. theme, and for such a simple concept it is extremely engaging. For some reason, you just HAVE to know what happens next. By the third episode, Stephen is becoming quite the ladies man as they visit a fashion show and during the after party, a stunning model comments on his good looks. Stephen, adorably, looks stunned.
For the rest of the season the love triangle dominates, but at a meagre 11 episodes, it doesn't get boring or overdone. The typical 'prom' is covered, a breathtaking party of the most privileged american teenagers in one of the most beautiful locations you could ever hope of growing up in, and then, of course, graduation: what high school series would be complete without that? They make a graduation video full of sentimental clips that can easily bring a tear to your eye if you're not careful, and finally, they all say their goodbyes in the bittersweet finale aptly titled "Dunzo" (apparently Laguna slang for finished). The first season of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County is an engaging start to this series, and with the senior class gone next year, and Kristin being a year younger, she is set to have free reign next year.
My final verdict is a decent seven out of ten: it's not as great as the popularity might suggest, but it's not that bad either. I think the popularity stems from its accessibility: although most teenagers don't live in such privileged surroundings, most people can relate to relationships, drama, breakups and the like, and even if you can't, it's engaging to watch especially with such brilliant landscape. The second season of Laguna Beach will definitely be a one to watch. |
