Health and safety when using ink and toner cartridges

Ink and toner cartridges as sold by Abitech Systems Ltd. are obviously an indispensable component to inkjet and laserjet printers.

All cartridges have a limited life span and at some point will need replacing in order to guarantee optimum printing quality. Although modern toners are not thought to be hazardous to health there are still steps to take to ensure that changing toner cartridges is a safe and clean task.

When replacing cartridges it is important to ensure that the power has been turned off to avoid any electrical shocks. Toner ink powder is very fine and it is essential that none comes into contact with eyes or skin or is inhaled in any way. To avoid this issue, it is best to remove old toner cartridges and insert new ones very carefully and gently without causing clouds of ink dust.

If any toner dust does get on to skin or into eyes, it is imperative that the area is rinsed with clean water immediately to avoid any inflammation or allergic or respiratory reaction. Wearing rubber or protective gloves may be a measure which can be taken to avoid contact with the skin.

Avoiding toner dust being released into the office atmosphere is another issue which must be addressed. If any ink toner is spilt onto the floor for instance, it is essential to vacuum this up as quickly as possible in order to prevent it from rising into the air; it is best to avoid using a broom for this task.
