Recycling ink and toner cartridges

The number of ink and toner cartridges for printers used annually is enormous with the average household using up to 3 printer cartridges per year with offices and large companies using many more; currently only a small number of these used cartridges are being recycled or reused.

Any cartridges that are not recycled unfortunately will ultimately end up in various landfill sites and rubbish tips across the United Kingdom and these can take many generations to decompose. Recycling these printer elements can be much kinder to the environment than throwing them into the rubbish bin and can reduce the amounts of noxious or damaging chemicals that are buried into the ground.

Many charities therefore encourage consumers to donate empty ink or toner cartridges to them in order to generate a charitable income. Most of these charities will collect the empty cartridges from homes or offices or, alternatively, it is usually possible to donate them at the local charity shop on the high street. These charities are able to make money from refilling and reselling ink cartridges though generally toner cartridges cannot be refilled. Toner cartridges can be sold back to the manufacturer for reuse and will cost a fraction of the cost to reprocess compared to manufacturing these components from scratch.

In order to encourage more recycling of these types of cartridges, Abitech Systems Ltd. will pay schools, colleges or universities £2.50 for every empty ink or toner cartridge that is returned. This will raise awareness of green issues.
