What Is the Most Common File Type In Windows?

Even though you do not need to view them all the time, it may be beneficial to understand what a few of the most common file types are in the Windows environment. Pretty much all of us are aware of the more common files for example: .doc (Word), .PDF (Adobe Acrobat), .jpg (Image), .txt (WordPad/ascii ), and .gif (Image). You are also most likely aware of .mp3 (music), .exe (Executable), zip (Winzip), . There are numerous others you may or may not know about.

There are lots of other common files types that you probably would have no idea what they were if you just saw them listed, however, most of the time they are very important. We will mention a number of the most used and essential ones and give some examples of the extensions.

Font Files - this common file type is usually used in programs such as Microsoft Word and in your graphics software, for example Adobe Photoshop and eMail. Examples would be .abf (ABF - Adobe Binary Screen Font), .otf (OpenType Font), TTF (.ttf, .ttc) - TrueType and FON (Bitmapped Font).

Audio Files - there are quite a few of these, however, the most common files in this group are .wav (WAVE Audio Files), .mp3(MP3 Audio File), .wma (Windows Media Audio File), and .aif (Audio Interchange File Format). These could be utilized in your iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.

System Files - a lot of these files should not be changed or edited, unless you know what you really are doing. Removing any of these files by merely clicking a delete key could cause a major crash of the Windows system, or important programs. Common files are .dll (Dynamic Link Library), .sys (System File - Windows), .cab (Windows Cabinet File), .drv (Device Driver), and .lnk (File Shortcut).

There are numerous other common file types that are crucial to your Windows environment and permit your machine to function properly , a few are .exe (Executable File-Windows based), .bat (Batch File - DOS),.vb ( VBScript File) and .ini (Initialization File - Windows).

Should you be asking yourself why we thought this information would be beneficial to you, it is very simple, we do not want you deleting any files that are necessary to run your pc. I know that I myself have gotten delete key happy and deleted important .dll files, or perhaps a file I did not mean to delete. In any event, knowledge is always something we all can use, and never have enough of.
