Using Frequent Flyer Points for Car Rentals

Earning frequent flyer point for car rentals can be a great way to bolster your point total as well as get something a little extra from your rental dollar. While certain travelers might find this aspect of earning frequent flyer points more advantageous than others depending on the amount of travelling they do or the frequency of their car rentals, it’s hard to deny that earning extra points for doing something you might have done anyway is not an incentive. Once you've earned enough points to make a purchase, you probably want to make sure you are making the most out of your redemption opportunity. This is often easier said than done, and a little bit of consumer due diligency can help you get the most for your points. But what should you look for when converting your earned points into vouchers to be used toward the rental of a car?

Through your frequent flyer program, you may be able to redeem your points for a variety of vouchers to be put toward various items and uses. You may decide to redeem a portion of your points to be used for car rental vouchers. The number of points it takes to receive a voucher may depend on both the particular car rental service you choose to utilize as well as the dollar amount for which you purchase the voucher. It is important however that you understand the terms of the program and certain things to consider before using valuable points that you might have used elsewhere.

First off, it is probably a good idea not to wait until the last minute to order your voucher, since there might be a delay between the time you order your voucher and when you receive it. Once you receive your voucher there are still plenty of terms, restrictions or conditions that might apply to your situation and that are important to bear in mind. Items like expiration dates, age and credit requirements, advanced reservation requirements, car availability, and country restrictions may all come into play when renting your vehicle.

You may also find that you won’t receive a refund on unused portions of your voucher, that the voucher may only be applied to one rental, that there are one-way rental restrictions, and that you’ll need a valid credit card and the actual voucher when you arrive to pick up the rental. Knowing and understanding such terms and conditions of your voucher use can make utilizing your voucher easier, more efficient and help you make more effective use of those valuable frequent flyer points.
