Everything You Need to Know to Get Into Flying RC Planes

Flying RC planes is a exciting pastime for hobbyists of all ages that allow them to virtually experience the joy of flight. If you would like to get into RC flying, here is a short beginner's guide.

Flight Simulators

Before buying a model RC flyer, you might want to begin by learning on an RC flight simulator. Simulator software allows you to experience what it is really like to fly a model plane without the risk of wrecking your model through trial-and-error flying. Simulator software can be downloaded for free or you can buy commercial versions but you will need a controller that you plug into the USB port. If you have your own radio system already, you can use this with the simulator so you can practice with the actual controller you'll be using on the field.

Types of Models

Now that you've had some practice in virtually flying RC planes, you can purchase a model so you can try your hand with the real thing. For beginners, it is generally advised that they get ready-to-fly models that require little assembly and have everything necessary to get into the air quickly. You can choose from electric-powered or glow engines that run on a special fuel. Electric engines run more quietly, but glow engines allow you to have a more genuine flying experience since they sound like the real thing.

The best kind of model plane to get for beginners is park fliers with simple controls. While the maneuvers that you can perform on these types of planes are limited (you can basically, just move up and down and side to side) they are affordable and a great way to learn how to fly without having to spend too much. Don't get a flyer with too long a wingspan since you may have a hard time controlling it; ideally the wingspan for a starter plane should be around 30-inches to 50-inches. Also, a plane with a high wing design has more stability, making it easier to fly.

Radio System

Another important thing to think about is the radio system you will use to fly the plane. The system consists of a transmitter unit which you use to control the plane and a receiver that is installed in the model. Most basic radio systems have four channels that allow you to fly most RC planes models. Each channel in the radio system controls a certain function; the four channel system controls the throttle, rudder, elevator and ailerons. Once you've gotten more experience, however, you'll want to upgrade to systems with more channels which will allow you to control features such as sliding canopies, bomb drops and dive brakes.

Flying Fields

Once you've assembled your model plane, you will need a place to fly it in. The size of the flying field you'll need is determined by the size of your plane, with larger models naturally requiring more room. If you are limited to flying at a local park, however, you may want to stay with a smaller plane that does not fly as far.

You might also consider joining an RC planes flying club that will not only allow you to network with your fellow model plane enthusiasts but also give you access to a controlled flying site that supports larger planes.
