Solar lights used as part of Christmas display

These days, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of environment issues and so the popularity of solar lights is rising. As well as helping to save the planet, such devices can also help reduce people's electricity bills, providing an additional incentive for purchasing them.

One town that has been making use of solar fairy lights is Brixham.

According to the South Devon Herald Express, there are solar lights on Christmas trees in New Road.

Local councillor Vic Ellery, who is the community services chairman, made the observation.

His comments came after an announcement that an iconic building within the town has been fitted with hundreds of lights in time for the festive celebrations.

The town hall is to form part of this year's winter display for the first time and, as a result, more than 280 metres of rope lights now surround the outline of the construction.

Workers have been busy putting the bolts in to support the display and it took them a week to ensure all the eye bolts were in place.

Councillor Ellery stated: "This will be a wonderful addition to our Christmas display and will brighten the Bolton Cross area, which has not had illumination until this year."

He added: "It will be amazing to see the features on the facade of this historic building become a real feature and a centre piece for the lights in this area of town, just as our Santa and reindeer are a feature in the harbour."

The town hall lights are due to be illuminated for the first time on November 27th, which is also when the solar fairy lights on the Christmas tree will be switched on.

Indeed, towns and cities across the UK will be having their light switch-ons at around this time as 2010's Christmas festivities get underway.
