Winter Home Maintenance Tips – Indoor Trick

There is no alternative to experience. It is best to learn from others experiences because it minimizes the risk of failure. Adapting those practices increases the chances of succeeding. There are many experiences to learn from that have been practiced for ages to avoid certain problems in the winter. These simple winter home maintenance chores can prevent a lot of damage from occurring. It is better to prepare a checklist to follow guidelines for winter home maintenance. These activities can be broadly classified into outdoor and indoor activities. Since everybody might have a general idea of what it means to take care of the outdoor, I will go through some of the most typical indoor techniques and focus on two of the most important ones – more precisely furnace and weather stripping.

The indoor activities are relatively easy, and in short they include:

a) The weather strips can be very handy to conserve heat. It can substantially reduce your electricity bill.
b) The cracks in the windows that let the heat escape should be covered with duct tape.
c) Those who have installed furnace heating system. They should clean the air filter on regular intervals.
d) The batteries used in the gadgets to gauge the oxygen level should be replaced and the fire extinguisher should be recharged.

Now, as promised, we will discuss in detail the most important ones:

Furnace

No matter what your skill level is, or how much it can end up costing you, you simply have to schedule your heating system maintenance call. Why? Simply because any unit needs checking – and you would not want winter to be upon you and your system to suddenly let you down. Imagine the 23rd of December with no heat, and nobody there to be able to help – now that's one hell of a bad luck, but are you willing to risk it? Thought so. Depending on the type of heating system you own, the burners and fan must be cleaned, moving parts have to be lubricated not to mention filters changed. If you use mechanical or automated systems then you should know that every moving part needs to be checked for its integrity. Humidifiers should also be cleaned out around the same time.

Weather Stripping

Okay, so we got your house warm, and we slimmed down the chance of anything breaking down in that department. Now let's focus on keeping that warmth indoors, and not share it with the cold winter outside – we wouldn't want to contribute to global warming now, would we? New houses are easier to maintain since you most probably have windows and doors that seal off and don't create a constant draft. With old windows and doors you may need to start sealing them or else you'll end up inviting the cold in. Replacing them is one way – starting to use stripping kits is another way. How to do this depends on the size and shape of your door – truth be told, with all these stripping kits that you can find at any hardware store you should not have a very hard time finding the proper way to fix the draft.

Good luck!
