The Fuel Theft Epidemic

Since 2008, there has been an increase in crime which has affected us on a global level. As fuel prices rise throughout the world due to the current financial issues, the increase of fuel theft has become a huge problem throughout the EU. Unfortunately to many of the individuals who have chosen to partake in this crime, the field of transportation has been seen as an easy target in which to save themselves money and make a profit at the same time and this theft has shockingly increased from year to year.

One of the most alarming factors of this current epidemic is the lengths thieves will go to in order to obtain fuel for themselves. There have been many cases within the UK where fuel has been taken from cars which are residing on the premises of the victim, meaning that their fuel is quite literally being taken from them right under their noses. This has been made possible by thieves bypassing locks on the vehicle and siphoning the fuel directly out of the individuals’ car or van. As fuel looters commonly opt to take fuel from people’s cars at night, it can be hard for them to be easily detected and stopped. In many cases, a fuel theft can be detected by the vehicle’s fuel line being cut or the tank being drilled, however, as technologies advance, so have the ways in which thieves are able to access our fuel. In this event, it is an unfortunate fact that many victims will be unaware of their loss until their ignition fails to spark.

Within the UK, it has been acknowledged that some areas have been more affected by this issue than others, with Greater London, South West England and the West Midlands being affected most by fuel thefts. Some organisations may see this issue as more of a ‘nuisance’ than an epidemic, but the sad truth is that as the prices of fuel continue to increase, so will the level of thefts which occur to innocent motorists every single year-and it is not just their petrol they will lose through this crime. As fuel prices increase, many road users are becoming increasingly aware of the amount of money they spend on fuel and how much they use their vehicle. A fuel loss does not only result in losing your petrol or diesel, but also money as you will be required to replace the fuel you have lost. Depending on the method which thieves have chosen in order to extract your fuel, you could also potentially face great costs for repairs to be made.

It is only by making the effort to stop this crime increasing that we will be able to not only protect our fuel, but also help to protect the business of filling stations that are also at risk. By opting for methods such as anti-siphoning devices in our vehicles and by using dyes within our petrol and diesel, can we not only deter these criminals, but also help make identifying the culprits that much easier.
