What is LCD technology?

Modern life is so full of technology that hardly anyone understands, that everyone has become used to using it without having any idea how it all works. Even cars are full of computerised functions, so a car maintenance course, done many years ago, may no longer help when your car won’t start.

Nowhere is this truer than in the computing world. Almost everyone uses computers and laptops at work and home, but with maybe one in a hundred knowing anything about how they work. Even the names of parts are like a question from a television quiz. For example, what does LCD stand for? After much thought, you might come up with Liquid Crystal Display, but it doesn’t get you much further unless you know what that means.

In fact, a liquid crystal display is created when certain types of substances are in a position, known as a phase, between being solid and being liquid and the molecules will be in some sort of order as they would in a solid, but are not in a specific position, so are like a liquid.

It gets a lot more complicated after this, but that’s probably as far as most people want to go, other than knowing that liquid crystal displays consist of a thin layer of this ‘liquid’ between two sheets of glass or other transparent material.

The advantage for laptops is that LCD laptop screens can be much thinner and lighter than the screens on old style monitors. Without LCD laptop screens, laptops would not be as slender and lightweight as they are these days.

Here at Laptop Power UK, we supply replacement laptop screens to be compatible with all the major brands of laptops so if you have a damaged laptop screen, we can quickly solve your problem.
