Plunger Pumps- A Few Fundamental Facts

Plunger pumps are a relatively new term for layman, unlike its other counterparts, e.g. pressure washer pumps, misting pumps, and car wash pumps. Well, they are nothing but a type of positive displacement pumps used in various industry applications. They are also known as well service pumps, high pressure pumps, or high viscosity pumps.

The making of plunger pumps:
The raw materials used in the making of plunger pumps are die-cast bodies and a brass head. However, its internal components usually include a special thick solid ceramic plunger for additional durability. The precision cast cooling fins in these pumps are anodized for optimal heat dissipation. Again, specially designed valve cages of ultra-form provide positive seating and absolute shelf life to these plunger pumps. Ball bearings on both sides of solid shaft drive pumps. For extra strength and load disbursement, there is an oversize one-piece connecting rod made of special alloy aluminum.

The applications of plunger pumps:
Since its invention by Samuel Morland based on a patent of 1675, the uses of plunger pumps has only multiplied. In fact, the plunger pumps are used in applications that could range from 70 to 2070 bars and are usually used in lower pressure applications. Among the various industries that make use of these plunger pumps are automotive industry e.g. in gearbox , belt drive, or coupling drive systems driven by electric motor or gasoline driven systems. It needs to be mentioned here that plunger pump heads are preferably used for plain, non-critical fluids.

Safe tips for plunger pumps handling:
Since the plunger pumps, piston pumps, tri-plex plunger pumps, pressure washer pumps are used in almost all industry sectors, it is very necessary to determine their components before their practical application. This helps in preventing accidents related to wear and tear. It is to be mentioned here that you have to be very careful with the components that may vary from bronze, brass, to steel, and iron, etc.

Here in an example to make it clear to you. For example, you may use solid ceramic plungers when the medium you are using is water or oil, but when it is acid, it is highly un-recommended.

So, always be aware when you use plunger pumps whether it’s for your household or for your industrial purposes.
