Memory foam mattresses- the good and the bad points

The first and most significant benefit of a memory foam mattress is even support for the whole body including problem areas like the neck. The spine is allowed to rest in its natural, relaxed curve instead of being pushed out of alignment. That results in a very comfortable sleep. Anyone who experiences neck, shoulder, or back problems will particularly enjoy the advantages of the tailored support a memory foam mattress can provide.

They are also less allergenic than normal sprung mattresses, because there are no enclosed, uncleanable spaces where dust mites can gather and thrive. The memory foam materials used in construction are typically not air-permeable (or ‘breathable’) so there is no opportunity for dust to get in there and cause problems for sleepers.

However, the lack of breathability has less desirable consequences. Like wearing a plastic raincoat, sleeping on a surface that is not at all breathable can feel sweaty and clammy. Of course that has consequences for sleeping comfort, especially in warm climates or in the summer months in the UK. Some producers are creating solutions by changing the build structure of outer surface of the foam, or by providing breathable tops. It is well worth considering this kind of feature when buying a memory foam mattress.

The memory foam used in mattresses will also retain heat better than a normal one. That’s great news for those who tend to wake up in the small hours with chilly feet, but those who sleep hot should invest in a breathable topper or be aware that they may need to change the kind of bedding they use in each season. A memory foam mattress will also seem colder when you get in, although once warmed up it’ll stay warmer for longer. This problem can be solved by switching on an electric blanket half an hour before bed- something that also provides an extra touch of luxury.
