It is recommended that you call a professional to clean the furnace. They will clean oil, dirt, debris not only of furnace but also air dust to ensure efficient supply of gas.
2. Clean or replace the air filter regularly. Monthly replacement of filter is important. Dirty filters will not help in heat conduction. Another option is in using disposable filters. They are cheaper and for more efficient.

Also ensure that there is no leak in walls and doors. In case of any leakage, cold air enters in to house and furnace will work hard. Check cracks around the fireplace.
4. Reduce temperature during night and use warm clothing. It's a guaranteed way to reduced costs.
5. Ceiling fans can also help. They help circulate heat around the room. Reversing the fan direction can spread warm air throughout the house. If vent is present in the room, then properly close them. Vents are rarely used, but lost heat. Keep them close, so the heat remains in room and it will help in reducing heating cost.
6. Keep windows and doors open so that sunlight enters the house. You can also take advantage of weather-strips, doors, windows, attics and basements. They prevent entry of cold air and retain heat.
Another useful tip is to run machines that produce a lot of heat on full load. And if you want to purchase new machines, then buys energy efficient machines. Check if they have working thermostats before you purchase the machines.
