Senate Democrats Say Obama 'Reinforced' His Stance on Contraception Mandate at Democratic Retreat

President Obama "reinforced" his stance on the controversial contraception mandate although speaking at the Democrats' yearly retreat at Nationals playground in Washington, D.C. today, Senate Democrats said.
The retreat was closed to media.
Following President Obama's speech at the retreat, a small party of Senate Democrats, for the most part women, left the retreat earlier to be able to hold a news conference on Capitol Hill to counter the Republicans' news conference these days at which they known as for the mandate for being overturned.
Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to grow to be the seventh in the country to permit same-sex couples to wed.
The action comes every day right after a federal appeals court declared California's ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it experienced been a violation within the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.
The Washington home passed the expenses on the 55-43 vote. The state Senate authorized the assess final week. And Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire is expected to sign the assess into law next week.
Democratic Rep. Jamie Pedersen, a gay lawmaker from Seattle who has sponsored gay rights bills in the home for a number of years, mentioned that although he and his companion are grateful for the rights that exist below the state's current domestic partnership law, "domestic partnership is in fact a pale and inadequate substitute for marriage."
Pedersen cited Tuesday's ruling through the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals throughout his remarks on the home floor.
"The court addressed the query of why marriage matters directly," he said, and read a part through the ruling that stated "marriage will be the name that culture offers towards the romantic relationship that matters most among two adults."
"I would like for our 4 kids to develop up understanding that their daddy and their poppa have made that sort of the lifelong responsibility to each other," he said. "Marriage will be the term that people use in our culture to convey that idea."
Democrats mentioned they will "fight strongly" to retain the mandate in place.
"It is our obvious understanding through the administration how the president believes as we do, as properly as the huge majority within the American women should have access to birth control," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., mentioned pointing out that 15 percent of women use birth manage for medical issues. "It's medicine, and women deserve their medicine."
Democrats these days known as on Republicans to stop using women being a "political football," and stop defining this debate, as Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., did earlier in the day, being a religious issue.
"It's time to inform Republicans 'mind your own business,'" mentioned Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J. "Ideology should by no means be employed to obstruct women from getting the treatment they must guide healthier lives.
"The power to decide regardless of whether or not to make use of contraception lies with a female - not her boss," mentioned Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. "What is more intrusive than attempting to permit an employer to make medical choices for someone who functions for them?"
Sen. Patty Murray, chairman within the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, was asked if she was concerned about some Democrats, such as Tim Kaine, the past DNC chairman and Virginia governor now running for any Virginia Senate seat, saying the contraception mandate is in fact a "bad decision" through the administration.
"I understand that our candidates know their states and they know their own beliefs, and I back again them in doing that," Murray said.
