Disability and Your Company

Discrimination against those with disabilities is never an acceptable thing. And yet, it can be easy for companies themselves to feel that they are being discriminated against by having to spend huge amounts of money to make their premises suitable for those with disabilities. The reason that businesses can often feel they are spending money needlessly is that it is very easy to misunderstand the term ‘disability.’

However, it is worth remembering that there are many different forms of disability and just because it would be unsuitable for someone with a certain disability to work in a certain environment, many others with different disabilities may well have no trouble at all undertaking specific work.

It is also worth remembering that it is not just those working for you that may be disabled, but that those who visit your premises, and customers, clients or even delivery staff may well have certain disabilities that need to be catered for. Even if you have no disabled members of staff on your workforce, it is also worth remembering that without taking the right steps and adding the likes of a platform lift, you may find that you have to overlook certain candidates or that you cannot accommodate current staff should they become injured or disabled.

The costs of adding a platform lift or wheelchair lift do not have to be too high and it can also cause far less disruption than many people think. It is also easy to ensure that any such wheelchair lifts can be designed to fit perfectly in with the current style and layout of your premises.

It is also wise to remember that you are obliged to make reasonable adjustments, not change the entire running of your company. As such, if you are unsure how these ‘reasonable adjustments’ will apply to you, it is worth talking to the experts before you start looking to make any changes.
