Guide to Skin Care for the Colder Months

Winter weather leads to all sorts of nuisances – extra weight from all the holiday excesses, higher electricity bills to heat the house, extra layers of clothes and boots to stay warm and dry in the rain or snow, and a general lack of invigorating sunshine, which can be downright depressing. But that isn’t all. The cold, dry winter weather can also be a big problem for your skin. So if you want to look fresh and glowing despite the frosty conditions outside, you will need to safeguard your skin and nourish it with extra-special care.

Consider the following tips for various types of winter weather:

Basic Winter Skincare Tips

● Avoid overly hot water when washing your face, as it will dry your skin out.But don’t use water that is too cold, either. Lukewarm is best.

● Use a moisturizing gel when you shower, and immediately follow all showers with a good-quality body lotion.

● If you have sensitive skin, use a soft peeling cream for cleansing and a neutral washing gel in the shower.

● Skip the harsh facial peels and antibacterial masks and try a nourishing vitamin mask in the wintertime.

● Try a sprinkle of thermal spa water after showering or washing your face in the evening to freshen and moisturize your skin.

● Always use a day cream 30 minutes before you leave the house, or 60 minutes in freezing temperatures. As a rule, you should never apply any facial products immediately before going out into the cold.

● Adjust your skin care products for extra nourishment – use a moisturizing cream with extra protection and pay special attention to your problem areas, especially if you have combination skin.

Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle Tips

The old saying posits that you are what you eat, and this definitely applies to your skin. During the wintertime, you can avoid many of the skin problems associated with cold weather by adjusting your diet and exercise routine to promote a healthy glow. Consider the following tips:

● Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, such as pomegranate, kiwi and citrus, to boost vitamin intake for summery skin.

● Complement your diet with vitamins supplements that are intended to strengthen the hair, fingernails and sink tone.

● Don’t let the winter blues drag you down – keep moving, get your heart going and increase your oxygen intake with outdoor exercise, such as skiing and skating at open rinks.
