Steps to tanking a damp wall
|
Rainy season brings along various positive and negative impacts in many peoples’ life. While it may be welcome after a very hot season, continues rain could make day to day activities difficult. On top of it all family members tend to fall ill more often and you may end up finding unwelcome leaks and damp walls in the house.
Yes all above issues can be fixed, the most time taking would be to fix damp walls and damp proofing the basement. Damp patches bring out the faults in penetrating damp in the walls. This can be fixed by a method called Tanking. This method is mainly used in basements and cellars which are at low levels and commonly known as Basement tanking. Tanking is the method commonly used when it is not possible to access the outer walls – e.g. like in basements and cellars.
Thinking of doing this on your own? Yes it is possible. If you have the require materials you can do your own basement tanking. There are two methods to tank walls. One is simply to fix sheets of polypropylene membrane to the walls with membrane clips. Then the sheets need to be joined by double-sided tape.
Or you could simply apply two part of epoxy damp proof membrane or a bitumen latex emulsion to the walls and floors.
The first method is very effective for areas with severe dampness. But if the problem is very severe it is best to seek professional assistance as it will also be necessary to fix channels as a method to collect the water. Also a pump will be fixed to remove the water from behind the membrane itself.
The second method is ideal in the early stage of dampness. There will be safety instructions to be followed when using the damp proof product. It will be necessary to wear goggles, a mask and rubber gloves. This method is simple as painting a wall. After stripping away the walls to expose the concrete or masonry it is necessary to wash away any grease or oil. Once you have applied the coatings as per instructions you can even decorate the walls as soon as the coatings are dried.
If you get stuck in the process, call the experts immediately to fix and complete the task effectively. Once you have tanked your basement or cellar you will not have to worry about damp walls for a very long time.
