CRB Check to Protect from Criminal Allegations
|
What is a CRB Check?
A CRB check is primarily designed for employers to carry out proper and authentic checks on staff, potential staff and students who may come into contact with children (under 18) and vulnerable adult groups. (‘At Risk’ groups). Abbreviated as Criminal Records Bureau, CRB keeps records of reports related to previous criminal charges against a person who might be an applicant, employee, volunteer, or student. The CRB then sends the records to the employer that has done the CRB check in addition to send them to the person upon whom the check is being conducted. Basically, the check is done either in standard level or enhanced level. In fact, the level of the CRB check is determined based on the intensity of the exposure and risk associated with the relationship between the individual and the children and/or vulnerable groups.
Why CRB checks are beneficial?
The CRB check is designed to provide safeguard to children and vulnerable groups ‘at risk’ of abuse.
The check shields the university and colleagues against potential threat of allegations.
The CRB check or enhanced disclosure makes selection procedures strenuous for both students and staff who may come in contact with children and other vulnerable groups.
The check also enables organisations to hire candidates in compliance with the standards and professional/statutory requirements fixed by them.
Last but not the least, the CRB check lessens responsibility to a great extent.
When would be the fruitful time to conduct CRB checks?
CRB checks are performed when an individual is being offered to hold a position, placement or programme of study with the university and as a result the CRB check is required to evaluate his/her risk assessment.
Whilst the process of CRB check or enhanced disclosure is underway, individuals who intend, or are required, to initiate work before the disclosure of the CRB report must complete a ‘Self Declaration’. It is interesting to note that if the CRB check report does not meet the criteria as per the guidance provided, then the individual would fail to retain the candidature for the post, programme or placement. At the same time, the information obtaining from CRB check must be kept secret for overall benefit. |
