Dangerous Goods are also known as hazardous materials or HAZMAT. They can be defined as harmful goods which pose great threat to the environment as well as mankind. Today the use of these goods have increased to a considerable extent all over the world; therefore, it is very important to have knowledge about them, their intensity of hazard and how to handle them because then only it will be possible to protect the environment as well as humans from their adverse effects.
Dangerous Goods are classified into nine categories such as radioactive gases, corrosive, solid flammables, oxidizers, poison, explosives, liquid flammables and combustibles as well as miscellaneous. It is very important to handle these goods efficiently so that they do not cause any harm to the nature, property and human lives. Therefore, it is mandatory for all the officials, who have to deal with such goods, to undergo a strict training program before handling these goods in order to ensure safety of this world, its environment as well as population. There are various training programs which provide detailed information about such goods, their hazard intensity and how can they be dealt. These training programs also provide information about the rules and regulations for transportation of dangerous goods from one place to another.
Hazardous Materials Management plays a significant role in safeguarding environment and human beings from the harmful effects of hazardous materials. Actually, hazardous materials management includes many things. There are many clauses, rules and regulations that have been laid down regarding management of hazardous materials which needs to be followed compulsorily. It mainly deals with hazardous materials wastes and ways of disposing these wastes safely so that they do not cause harm to the nature and mankind.
Hazardous Materials Management not only involves effective handling of such materials but also their storage, transportation and removal. Some important work areas in management of hazardous materials are minimization of production of wastes from hazardous materials, proper disposal of hazardous wastes and taking care whether proper steps and procedures for storage and disposal of hazardous wastes are being followed or not. The management of hazardous materials has become so important that efforts are being made to include it in management study programs as well as in school curriculum and other educational institutions in order to provide basic level information.
Thus, proper handling of Dangerous Goods and disposal of their wastes is possible only with the help of proper and efficient Hazardous Materials Management program. |
