Get purified with the inflow of pious Yamuna River at Yamunotri Dham


Yamunotri Dham is one out of four sites of Char Dham Yatra (Pilgrimage). It is the holy shrine of Yamunotri which happens to be the source for river Yamuna that originates in the Garhwal Mountains opposite to Gangotri; the source for the holy Ganges. It is located at a height of 4421 m above sea level. A simple dip in the ice cold waters of Yamunotri during Yamunotri Dham tour is said to wash away all sins and restore innocence back to the individual.

The temple of goddess Yamuna is visited during the Yamunotri Dham Yatra, which holds an idol of the river goddess, Yamuna. Devotees worship and perform rituals here during. The Surya Kund, Divya Sila, Janki and Hanuman Chatti, and Saptarshi Kund Lake are the major attractions of Yamunotri Dham where pilgrims flock together during their tour.

Surya Kund is the holy thermal spring at Yamunotri Dham, which runs at a temperature of almost 190 degree. It is named after the Sun god (Surya) and hence the temperature resembles the same. The pilgrims often lower rice and potatoes in a sack and it gets cooked in less than one minute!

The Divya Shila is a giant rock pillar which the devotees worship before they enter the temple during. It is the second best attraction for pilgrims at the Shri Yamunotri Dham.

The Janki and Hanuman Chatti are located at a distance of 5 km and 13 kms respectively from the Yamunotri Dham. The Janki Chatti also has a thermal spring where the pilgrims of enjoy a hot dip. On the other hand, the Hanuman Chatti is the confluence for Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna River. The pilgrims hire ponies and ports to carry them and their luggage as they had to climb uphill.

The last attraction of Yamunotri Dham is the Saptarishi Kund Lake which is located at a distance of situated 10 kms from Yamunotri. This is the source for river Yamuna and an ice caped lake with glaciers surrounding the entire river area. One of the major attractions of the place are slate stones with natural carvings found on the banks of the river along with the very rare Brahma Lotus which grows nowhere but here, well in abundance.
