Even though it is not a very popular destination among the British travelers, Vitoria still has some interesting places that are worth a visit. The weather here is not that good, but if you plan to visit this place, then summer could be better, when the temperature is just in twenties. You will get lot of options for car hire and that is the best way to explore this region.
The Alava region has some spectacular sights that make the tourists flock to this region to enjoy their vacation. Being the capital of Alava, Vitoria is located between Catile and the Northern Europe. It is officially known by another name called Vitoria-Gasteiz. The modern city was founded in the year 1181 by King Sancho VI, who renamed it as Vitoria. As it occupies a prominent position in Alava region, the place became popular for trading activities.
The noteworthy point in this place is that they make their own rules and there is equality among all races of people. Bilbao is the nearest place that has an airport and hence it is convenient to reach Vitoria by car, as it is just 66kms from Bilbao.
To get a glimpse of the ancient historic structure, you could travel down to Mendoza, which is a medieval town and has some towers and dungeons worth visiting. The dungeons are where the prisoners and even the lovers in that period were imprisoned, as a form of punishment. To enjoy some interesting activities away from the bustling crowd of the city, take a drive of 15kms from Vitoria to Garaio where you could do some unusual things for relaxation.
There is a beautiful park in this town that offers cycling, sailing, hill climbing, mountain biking and many other forms of sports, which are not commonly found in cities. There is also a bird observatory at the Mendixur, which is the right place for the bird lovers. Various species of birds flock to this place during the peak seasons.
All the parks will have in- house facilities for swimming and also spending some wonderful time with your family and friends. You could plan a picnic to such places and spend the whole day in merriment. You could also get some sports equipment on hire, to get the full pleasure of playing around in the park. Though more known for its historic structures, this place is worth a visit for the tourists too.
