Malaga : the Sun City of the Mediterranean

Malaga is also called the “Sun City of the Mediterranean” because of its association with the famous Costa del Sol, or the Sun Coast.

The name Malaga is derived from the Arabic Malj’a, meaning a resort. The city belongs to Malaga Province of Andalucia autonomous region in southern Spain. It is located on the bank of the Guadalmedina River and on the Costa del Sol. It is the second largest city of Spain in terms of population and the largest of the Costa del Sol. Its port on the Bay of Malaga is regarded as one of the best maintained ports in Spain. Malaga is the gateway to the Costa del Sol.

With its mild climate, ubiquitous greenery, beautiful beaches, historical landmarks and ample amenities for the tourists, Malaga has emerged as a cosmopolitan tourist hub.

Malaga is a historic city dating 3000 years back. It has remnants of the Roman, Arab and Spanish eras. Under Arab rule it became a magnificent, prosperous city.

It has ruins of medieval Arab palaces, a citadel named Gibralfaro, and other historical monuments. Notable are the castle of Alcazaba built during the 11th century by an Arab king, a 13th century cathedral built on a demolished mosque and a 14th century church.

From other parts of Spain, the city is accessible from the Malaga international airport, as well as by road and rail. Similarly, other towns of Andalucia can be accessed by bus and train service from Malaga. The notable towns are Granada, Cadiz, Ronda, Gibraltar, Cordova, Seville, Tanger and Centa, etc.

One can also reach the nearby Sierra Nevada, a mountainous country, where one can enjoy mountaineering and related activities. It is famous for plenty of snow during winters, which make skiing enjoyable. The skiing season starts in November.

During the past two decades, there has been construction of thousands of tourist apartments and villas on the coast and foreigners have purchased or taken them on rent in a big way.

The Port of Malaga is Iberian Peninsula’s second most important cruise ship destination. In 2010, there was a report of arrival of more than 659,000 cruisers.

In Malaga, tourists can have a lot of fun and pleasure by moving about its bars, restaurants, nightclubs and beach parties. Alternatively, one can relax calmly in the shade of palm trees, use the traditional hamams and massage parlors or stroll through the Picasso Arts Gallery and the city’s Botanical Gardens and the public parks.

The famous beaches of Malaga City are La Malagueta, Caleta and El Palo.
