Cerebral palsy is a generic name for a group of movement and cognitive impairments, caused by brain injury. It usually develops before birth and the disabilities are permanent. The purpose of treatment is to control the symptoms, reduce the disabilities and help individual reach their greatest physical, mental and social potentials.
Treatment types
There are many different types of therapy available, but not all of them are efficient for every person. Doctors and parents should work together in order to establish which type of therapy is recommended for each child. Some of the most common treatment types are:
• Rehabilitation, including physical therapy, use of special equipment and spasticity treatment. This type of treatments involves physical exercises, stretching, medications, injections and special equipment use with the purpose to develop muscle strength, flexibility and control. It will be needed in the majority of the cases.
• Occupational therapy helps patients learn physical skills they need to be more independent in everyday life.
• Speech therapy will be needed to help children with communication problems, by developing the muscles of the mouth and tongue, or by using a computerized voice synthesizer.
• Medical therapy will also be needed in the majority of cases, to deal with specific problems like seizure, feeding and digestive problems or breathing problems.
• Educational service will be useful to help children with learning disabilities who have however an average intelligence.
Financial support is available
The above mentioned treatment types are all expensive and many families cannot afford to pay for the best medical care available. For them there are several federal and state funds available. Besides that, depending on the cause of the injury that led to the development of cerebral palsy, they might have a valid legal claim in order to obtain financial compensation from the responsible parties.
