4 Steps Before You Buy a Chicken Run

If you want to keep your chickens happy and want nutritious eggs, the best thing to do is to provide them big space to run free. But as nowadays, having huge, free space is very expensive, you can do the next best thing, have chicken runs for your chickens.
Chicken runs are the ideal housing for your chickens where they can safely indulge in foraging and scratching. These housing structures can be easily constructed or you can buy them ready-made, starting usually from a low 50$ sum.

If you are thinking about getting a run, you should check these points before buying one:

1. Varmints- Your chickens need protection from various animals ranging from neighborhood pets and raccoons to snakes and carnivorous birds like crow, hawk etc. Many of these birds leave behind diseases. Therefore the fence of the run shouldn't have gaps larger than an inch. This will protect chickens from raccoons and snakes.

2. Escape- Although chickens are usually seen on ground, but they can also fly, to escape from their predators. Therefore, you should have a net on the top of the chicken runs so that they don't fly out. A net on top also protects the chickens from varmints too.

3. Mud- Chicken runs should always be located on higher ground with a good drainage system. Your birds are prone to disease if they stand in dirt for long period of time. As it is their nature, chickens enjoy scratching themselves in dirt or even among the low lying plants.

4. Which run is better, Stationery or Portable?- If you choose a stationery run for your chickens , you should arrange a ground cover or litter. If you choose portable runs, you can easily move them to a new ground once the birds have had their way with the old.

A quick tip if you have a portable run, you can place it in one corner of your lawn for few weeks and then move it to another place. After few days, you will be pleasantly surprised by the lush grass cover where you had your run earlier.

The best benefit of having runs for your chicken highly improves the nutritional value of their eggs. If you keep feeding your chickens and hens with grains everyday, you should forget about having nutritious eggs because just grains are not an ideal, healthy diet for chickens and hens.
