The Story Behind The Famous Mona Lisa Antique Painting

The Mona Lisa was finished in circa 1503-1519 by the Italian artist Leonard da Vinci. The painting in oil with a poplar panel is in the Louvre in Paris. Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait showing a woman who is seated. The portrait is filled with mystery, and the focus is the woman's facial expression and figure.
Through the years in the art community, there have been a lot of theories in connection with the woman and the landscape in this painting, questioning whether it is a portrait of Lisa Del Giaconda or da Vinci's mother. In 2010, a claim was made that there appeared to be tiny letters and numbers in Mona Lisa's eyes which were not visible to the naked eye, but you needed to use a special magnifying glass. The simple truth to this claim has been contested and the same gentleman who made this claim also stated that he believed that the painting was actually the likeness of da Vinci's male lover.
The Mona Lisa has made it through for more than 500 years, and it is in exceptional condition for a painting on a poplar panel. This is for the reason that the extensive conservation treatments which the painting has undergone over the years. However, the use of varnish has caused the painting to darken, and by 1809, an aggressive cleaning and revarnishing had removed the uppermost layer of the painting. The application of harsh products of that time brought on damage to the painting, causing a faded appearance to the face of Mona Lisa. The curators were worried about the extent of the damage.
The Mona Lisa was contaminated with bugs on its back panel and required reinforcing. The spot appeared to be treated with carbon tetrachloride, and then with ethylene oxide. This technique was repeated in 1985 as a preventive measure. Conservation and restoration facilities have developed and perfected techniques for all types of paintings, using both art and science, applying attention to detail and playing up on the old world craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology. Also, they considered an artwork's special needs, be it created by water damage, scratches, warping, fading or insect damage.
