Low maintenance for highly valued diamonds

When purchasing gold engagement rings that are set with diamonds, they will require some tender loving care to keep their brilliance in good order. It is a well know fact that diamonds are a hard material, however they are not indestructible.

Diamonds, especially the larger stones, can chip and break; the weakest part of diamond engagement rings is the girdle. The diamond needs to be set into a firm protective setting and not allowed to feel the full force of a blow of any kind. Wearing wedding rings and engagement rings is great for most normal activities; however it is essential to remove all diamond rings when attempting to do any job that might include exposure to a rough surface.

If gardening, going to the gym for a workout, decorating or doing the dishes at the sink, not placing them in a dishwasher, your rings could be damaged or lost. Over the length of time gold engagement rings and wedding rings could do with a clean. A diamond will have come in touch with household dirt and cleaning chemicals, makeup remover, moisturiser, hairspray and many other chemicals, all having a dulling effect on diamonds brilliance. Cleaning diamond engagement rings is easy, takes a few minutes and the sparkle of a diamond will soon reappear.

Method: Mix one part ammonia to six parts water. Using a brush that has soft bristles, dip them in to the solution. Slide the brush across the diamond or diamonds to loosen the dirt. Mind the settings of your ring, as you could scratch the metal. Finally rinse well and allow to dry naturally. At Marlows Diamonds we suggest to our entire clients an alternative way of maintaining their diamonds, by taking them to a reputable jeweller for a professional cleaning, or apply jewellery cleaner made especially by manufacturers for diamonds and their metal settings.
