Who's The REAL Interactive Marketing Audience?

Quick – what age group do you think embraces new technology and digital information faster: 18-25, 26-44, 45+? If you said our you 18-25 or 26-44 you were WRONG!
Surprising, isn’t it?

A report recently released by Accenture titled “Consumer Electronic Product & Services Usage Report” recently revealed that – gasp – Baby Boomers are actually the first to latch onto a new technology or digital product. As an employee of an interactive marketing company – one that’s largely comprised of workers under the age of 35 – this finding is a total shocker to me.

It’s largely been assumed that the biggest and most savvy technology consumers are our youth – 18-35 year olds who grew up most of their lives with computers, cell phones and high-tech televisions. This new finding means a whole new shift in the way an interactive marketing company operates. For the most part, we operated under the assumption that the people who would be most drawn to our wacky and fun interactive web ideas, new digital product and exciting tech news would be the youngin’s as well. Now, it’s time to shift that paradigm and learn to focus our efforts more on the real audience – the baby boomers.

The study also found that there has been a 13 percent increase in the number of Baby Boomers who watch podcasts or read blogs on a regular basis, and a huge 59 percent increase in the number of Baby Boomers using social networks.

Baby Boomers might not have grown up on technology, but they sure want to learn about it now.

As an interactive marketing company, what more could you want? An able, willing and excited consumer ready to learn more and soak in more from technology. It’s a marketing company’s dream!

Studies like this help us circle back to one of the tried and true strategies of marketing 101: know your consumer. When you know who is receiving your marketing efforts, you can better tailor your campaign to their likes, dislikes and preferences. You can even hone in on their buying styles and increase your chances of making a sale.

Staying on top of studies and statistics like these is key in succeeding in an online market. The web and digital technology is everchanging, so you have to keep informed to keep up. There is also another person out there waiting in the wings to jump in. Who knows, maybe it’s a baby boomer!
