The New Sony Xperia S Has A Variety Of Powerful Specifications

Recently announced at CES, the new Sony Xperia S is the most advanced handset in the Xperia range. In this article I will take a look at some of the key features of this incredible looking phone.

The first thing you will notice about this phone is its outstanding styling. This is arguably the best looking handset in the Xperia range, with a sleek finish and black colour scheme. The handset is quite large to accommodate the 4.3 inch screen, which dominates the front of the handset.

The screen on the Sony Xperia S is something quite special indeed. It uses the same LED-backlit LCD capacitive technology found on the likes of the iPhone 4S, resulting in superb brightness and colour saturation, but it outdoes the popular Apple device in terms of its screen resolution by quite a margin. The resolution stands at a whopping 720x 1280 pixels, so high definition videos and photos can be enjoyed on the screen. The video viewing experience is enhanced further by the Sony Mobile Bravia Engine, which calls upon the manufacturer’s expertise in producing high end televisions. The screen is also groundbreaking in seemingly mundane features like multi touch, with up to 10 points of contact being detected.

The screen is not the only exciting feature of this phone though. The camera is equally, if not more impressive. 8 megapixels has been the norm on most high end smartphones for the last year or so, but this handset provides a camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels. The Nokia N8 was the only phone with such a high pixel count until now, but this handset outdoes it with higher resolution video capture and a long list of image enhancing features. Video of 1080p can be captured, at 30 frames per second, meaning it joins the ranks of only a few handsets which can boast this attribute. Among the innovative extras of the camera are features like 3D still images and panoramic photos. Alongside this are standard features like touch focus, face & smile detection, LED flash, image stabilisation and autofocus.

The Sony Xperia S is well equipped for internet browsing, with 14.4 Mbps available when using a 3G connection, although it of course also has Wi-Fi support and internet browsing software provided as part of the TimeScape UI which is Sony’s custom Android interface. The operating system is the Gingerbread (v2.3) version of Android although it has been confirmed that it will support the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich version which will be rolling out to various manufacturer’s Android smartphones within the next few weeks. Under the hood you will find a powerful 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, meaning that along with the HTC Sensation XE, the Sony Xperia S is the most powerful phone currently available in terms of processing power.

There is of course much more to this phone than I have covered here, and I will look at some of its other features on future articles. If you are looking for the ultimate smartphone experience, you have found it in the Sony Xperia S, which is coming to selected UK networks in the very near future.
