American Football Believes to Add Grace to Sports in India

Sports in India these days centres around the Indian Premier League (IPL) and sporting bodies, media houses and business conglomerates – all make a beeline to follow the Indian Premier League. In the meantime, another sporting event is making foray into Asia and the game is none other than the popular American Football that is ready to flag off in the Indian subcontinent. There is a revelation that sports channel, Ten Sports has agreed to broadcast the game in India in a multi-year deal with the board, thus indicating a rise of a new era in sports in India.
If media reports are to be believed, India would witness the thrill of American Football in November 2012 in Pune. The governing body of the game and its founder in India, the Elite Football League of India (EFLI) has initially intended to start its first edition with eight teams - Mumbai Gladiators, Hyderabad Skykings, Goa Swarm, Pune Blacktigers, Kolkata Vipers, Delhi Defenders, Punjab Warriors and Bhubaneswar Warhawks.
The EFLI in association with the government of India has designed its own constitution to give American Football a new shape in sports in India like the way the BCCI did with the cricket. The inclusion of American Football in the list of Indian sports is a momentous occasion for both Indians and Americans and for the game as well. American Football is an integral part of sports in America in which emotion and excitement play a major role when the game is played.
With a history of over 100 years, the game has acquired cult status in US, which can be mapped alongside its history. India is a land that hosts diverse cultures and to accommodate a foreign sport is a way to show its solidarity with the internation community. Apart from this, there is no dearth of talents in India to adapt with the foreign sports. All these factors have encouraged EFLI to bring Americal Football into India with a hope to start a new chapter of sports in Asia. The American Football is projected to be the most lucrative sports league in India with planning in process to add eight more teams during the second year and four in each subsequent season until 2022. |
