The Apple iPhone 4 has been the choice for millions of users since its launch in summer 2010. But why has it proven to be so popular? In this article I will look at a couple of its key features to find out.
AppStore
Much of the appeal of smartphones in general is due to the ability to browse thousands of applications which can be downloaded straight to the phone. Android Market is growing rapidly, but Apple’s AppStore is responsible for most of the app downloads to date. Although it has been in existence since the first iPhone model, app download numbers exploded since the release of the iPhone 4. This is thanks to the new levels of hardware that this iPhone version introduced, as well as a new operating system. Apps which were more demanding on the hardware and operating system started being developed. The iPhone 4 has a powerful 1 GHz processor, high resolution retina display as iOS 4 platform. Features like these mean that apps from categories like games, entertainment, multimedia, and utilities were now able to carry out ever more versatile and demanding tasks than those of previous iPhone versions.
Camera
Arguable the most important feature for many when choosing a new camera phone for many, the iPhone 4 has a very capable 5 megapixel camera. This may not sound like the highest resolution, as these days most new smartphones have a camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels. However, at the time of its release, it was one of the most impressive, and to this day it can still give many new smartphones a run for their money in terms of their photography capabilities. The camera can capture video footage in 720p high definition and comes with an LED flash, autofocus ad geo-tagging. There are many photography apps which can be downloaded enhancing the functionality of the camera even further. You can see why the camera on this device has contributed to its popularity.
Internet Browsing
Another important use for smartphones and a major part of the appeal of smartphones in general is internet browsing. The iPhone 4, like other iPhone models, is well known for its abilities as an internet browsing device. Utilising both 3G coverage (via HSDPA connection) and Wi-Fi, users can connect to the internet just about anywhere, based on network coverage and signal strength. Once connected, users can choose the default Safari browser to visit websites, or download an alternative browsing from the app store, such as Opera Mini or Mozilla Firefox.
These are just a few of the features which contribute to the popularity of the iPhone 4. As one of the most popular smartphones in the world it offers something for everyone. Since the release of the iPhone 4S, and with the iPhone 5 probably on the way this summer, major UK networks are offering discounts on selected iPhone 4 tariffs, several of which are offering the handset for free.
