An Overview Of The Gaming Abilities On The Popular Apple iPhone 4S

With smartphones expected to do more and more and replace an ever increasing number of devices, gaming has naturally become an important part of the appeal of phones like the Apple iPhone 4S.

In this article, I will take a look at the features which make the iPhone 4S a good gaming device, and the benefits these bring to its users.

Screen
Obviously, an important part of the gameplay experience is the graphics on the screen. The iPhone 4S has the famous “retina” display found on the original iPhone 4. With a resolution of 640x 960, graphics are displayed with very fine levels of detail. The screen is also able to display up to 16 million colours, so the colour rendering (an important part of the graphics) is superb. The screen is not the biggest; 3.5 inches like the rest of the iPhone series, but this is big enough to allow users to use the touchscreen to control the game without covering up too much of the screen with their fingers when doing so.

Processor
The processor is responsible for the speeds at which graphics are displayed. The 1 GHz dual-core Apple A5 processor (as found in the iPad 2), provides all the computing power to make the graphics run smoothly, with no buffering or stalling. During the keynote speech where the iPhone 4S was unveiled, there was a lot of talk about the gaming capabilities of this phone, and the processor plays a large part.

Sensors
The iPhone 4S has built in gyro and accelerometer sensors, and these sense when the handset has been moved on an axis, or tilted from side to side. Most people will recognise this from when they turn the interface when on Facebook or sending a text. The interface will then rotate to fill the screen depending on whether it is tilted to landscape or portrait mode. These features can be used to actually control the game. For example, driving many droving games can be controlled by tilting the handset to steer the vehicle.

AppStore
With all the technology on offer, the iPhone 4S would be useless without any games to play. This is where the AppStore comes in. With thousands of game titles, you will be spoilt for choice. Many games are free, with several also available for a fee. The genres and titles on offer are just as diverse as those available for consoles and PCs. In fact, there are many console titles available in the AppStore.

As you can see, the iPhone 4S is ideally set up for gaming. There are very few handsets which can compete with it in the gaming arena and if gaming is an important part of smartphone use for you, the iPhone 4S is definitely worth a closer look.
