An Overview Of The Useful Widgets On The Popular HTC Sensation

The HTC Sensation is a great showcase for the apps and widgets available for various Android powered smartphones. In this article I will take a closer look at some of the more useful and popular widgets available.

What Is A Widget?
A widget is essentially an interactive app. They can be used without actually being opened. All of the necessary inputs and information are viewable on the interface of the widget itself, so it does not need to be opened to be used, although the sacrifice of this is that they take up a lot more room on the users interface than a standard app icon does.

An example of a popular social networking widget is FriendStream. This widget pulls data from both your Facebook and Twitter feeds, making them viewable on one interface. It also allows you to update your Facebook status whilst simultaneously sending out a new Tweet to Twitter, via the integrated toolbar.

Another great example of widgets is the calculator widget which is included with the HTC Sensation. This is a perfect example of what is widget is. It looks just like a pocket calculator, displayed in its entirety on the phone’s screen. It takes up a whole homescreen, but with seven customisable homescreens on the HTC Sensation, it makes a great time saver for those who regularly need to use a calculator, as there is no need to open the application; it is already open and ready to use right on the homescreen.

There are many more categories in which widgets fall. There is a handy calendar widget which integrates with your Facebook events. So if you have chosen to attend an even on Facebook, it will automatically make a note of it on the correct date(s) in the calendar, with a link to the event’s Facebook page. It also keeps track of you Facebook friends’ birthdays and marks these in the calendar.

There is a music widget included as standard with the HTC Sensation. This is essentially a shortcut panel .it has basic controls such as a volume slider, and play/pause, and skip track options, which are displayed with the album cover of the song which is currently playing. These are useable even when the screen is locked, which goes to show the time that widgets can save. You then simply touch the album artwork to go into the music app which presents you with more options and your music library.

Obviously, the widgets outlined above are just scratching the surface of what is available. There are many included as standard with the HTC Sensation, although there are many more available for download from HTC Hub. Other handsets have their own version of HTC Hub, with Samsung and Motorola offering similar services.

Obviously widgets are available on just about every Android smartphone available. The Sensation is a great showcase of the benefits of widgets due to its powerful hardware and multiple homescreens.
