The Giza Diaries

The historical city of Giza is a wonderland of Pharaohs and mummies. Giza is the third largest city of Egypt. It is located to the west of Nile near Cairo. Giza is most famous for its huge ancient structures build by Pharaohs. The great structures include pyramids, temples and Great Sphinx. Originally the name of archaeological site is Giza Necropolis. The pyramids are included in the Seven Wonders of the World and are a huge attraction for the tourists from all parts of the world. These are the oldest existing monuments of the world and are still intact in a good shape. The Pyramids of Giza consist of a largest pyramid called Great pyramid of Khufu, a slightly smaller pyramid of Khafre and the smallest pyramid of all three-the pyramid of Menkaure. All these pyramids are believed to be built for the kings they are named after.

The Great Sphinx is on the eastern side of the complex and is believed to be built by King Khafre. It has the face of a human and body of a loin. The purpose of these huge pyramids was to keep the souls of great kings alive and equipped with material things they need in afterlife. The ancient Egyptians believed that death in this live starts a new journey in the other and the kings who die start a new journey as kings of the dead. The city of Giza has seen wide scale construction of roads and buildings during British era. As the cultural site of Egypt as well as highly populated area, many new buildings and facilities were developed in the city recently as well. The city is the most important tourist attraction, for this reason British and current Egyptians rulers laid emphasis on development of the infrastructure widely. The city has a number of hospitals, private clinics and medical labs. The transportation of the city is highly developed with an extensive road network, railway, subway and maritime service. Giza is connected with Cairo through metro and is the fastest way to move between the two cities. There are numerous flyovers and bridges built on the city roads, yet the traffic is overwhelming in the highly populated city.

The climate of the city is arid climate with high humidity because of the River Nile. Wind storms are frequent in the city because of the Sahara desert. The weather is generally hot with the maximum temperature reaching 40C in summers. Winters experience low temperature but not on the extreme. The nights are usually colder in the city. Giza has a number of educational institutes including the famous University of Cairo which was moved to Giza from Cairo in 1924. This university is the most famous in Egypt as well as the whole Mediterranean. The University of Cairo is also among the best universities of the world and has given birth to famous people who have altered the shape of the world with their genius. The economy of the city is run by its tourism. Luxury apartments and hotels are built along River Nile and are popular places to live. In addition to tourism, the industries of Giza include movies, chemicals, cigarettes and machinery.
