Are You Ready to Ace the HSC and ATAR?

A crucial moment in the New South Wales secondary students' lives is receiving their HSC marks. These numbers determine how much they have progressed. For some, the HSC marks represent their years of hard work in school; for others, these are numbers of success. Another critical point in their young lives would be competing for their ATAR. This important number secures them a place in a university of their choice. The HSC marks the fulfilment of their past; the ATAR marks the beginning of their future.

From school marks to HSC exam results to conversion of scores to ATAR through the ATAR calculator, these influential numbers in a student's life can be achieved through years of preparation and perseverance. But what kind of preparation and studying should a student undergo? Matrix Education and their team of professional teachers and experienced tutors know exactly what it takes to hit the mark. They develop a functional, multimedia learning environment, and employ effective teaching techniques to provide their students with the confidence and support they need with their respective coursework.

Preparing for the HSC

Before a student can be granted the credential, he or she should be eligible for the Higher School Certificate. Below is a list of the HSC eligibility requirements provided by the Board of Studies of New South Wales. The student needs to:

* Be enrolled at a NSW government school, an accredited non-government school, or a TAFE NSW institute
* Study a permitted combination of courses
* Complete the syllabus requirements for each course
* Sit for, and make a genuine attempt at, the required HSC examinations
* Complete the HSC: All My Own Work program in ethical scholarship (or its equivalent)

The course requirements to be completed include at least 12 units of Preliminary pattern of study and at least 10 units of HSC pattern of study, which must have at least the following courses:

* 6 units from Board Developed Courses
* 2 units of a Board Developed Course in English
* 3 courses of 2-unit value or greater (either Board Developed or Board Endorsed)
* 4 subjects

There are 2 main types of courses in the HSC, which the student can choose from and satisfactorily complete.

* Board Developed Courses
- Courses with a syllabus and final exam set by the Board of Studies
- Courses include English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Creative Arts, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Human Society and its Environment, Languages and Vocational Education and Training
- Courses that contribute to the calculation of the ATAR

* Board Endorsed Courses
- Courses developed by the schools, TAFE or universities
- Courses may vary among schools
- Courses that contribute to the HSC but not to the calculation of the ATAR

All the HSC courses offered by the Board of Studies are valued in units. Each unit is equivalent to approximately 60 hours of classroom study per year. Majority of the courses are 2 units, which are usually divided into Preliminary and HSC components, taken during the last 2 years (Year 11 and Year 12) of the student's secondary education.
